Meet the Founder & CEO Latasha Howell
Latasha’s life was drastically changed in 1997 when she gave birth to her son at the age of 15. Having re-located from Kansas City, MO where her childhood struggles included a life filled with poverty, drugs, alcohol, sexual, verbal, mental, and physical abuse. Latasha was ready to break the vicious cycle in her family. Including her terrible home situation, which lead to Latasha spending two years in foster care. Finally, back living with her mother in Oklahoma City, OK hoping things would be better but things only got worse.
Just after getting suspended from NW Classen High School her sophomore year, Latasha found out she was pregnant. She had no clue what to do and she knew nothing about her body. Thankfully, the then Emerson Alternative School had the Outreach Program for pregnant girls and teen mothers. In addition, the program shared what was happening to themselves and their bodies and later what their babies and they themselves needed. The Emerson Teen Parent Program, constantly told the teens to “BE SOMETHING, DO SOMETHING” and re-enforced self-esteem, confidence, goal setting & achievement. Without the support, instruction, resources and encouragement of the program, Latasha might have turned out differently according to the statistics for teen moms, of whom most do not graduate and many never lift themselves and their children out of poverty. Through much determination & perseverance, Latasha not only received her high school diploma, but she also served in the US Navy & holds two degrees; one in Technical Communications A.A.S. from OSU-OKC and a B.S. in Organizational Leadership from Southern Nazarene University.
In 2009, Latasha Howell started volunteering at Putnam City Academy (PCA), primarily just talking to teens from her own experience. After a few months, she noticed the students were not being pushed to be & do more with their lives. Latasha saw this as an opportunity & jumped right in. She began arranging banquets, field trips & writing assignments to push the girls to new heights. In 2012, after three years at PCA & seeing the huge need to decrease teen parent statistics, Latasha founded LILIES & REEDS SOCIETY. For nine years she has mentored at risk youth & earned their respect through hard work & dedication. From business colleagues to friends surveyed, Latasha is determined to decrease teen pregnancy rates in Oklahoma & extremely passionate about making this program successful. Over time, LILIES & REEDS SOCIETY will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors & the community at large.
